Since the 1900s, worldwide celebrations of International Women’s Day on March 8th have marked the many achievements by women in social, educational, economic and political arenas. Yet in the areas of preventing violence against women and young girls, there is much to be done. WHO ARE THE TYPICAL VICTIMS?
An estimated annual number of 1.5 million women are victims of physical assault and/or rape by an intimate partner. 85% of victims are women, with young females ages 20-24 placed at greater risk of injury. One out of four women will experience “Domestic Violence” in her lifetime. Most often victimized by someone they know. Most often never reported to the police.

WHAT CONSTITUTES DOMESTIC VIOLENCE?
Typical examples include: Physical acts of pushing, shoving, grabbing, punching, threatening to kill, harm, use or displaying of weapons, use of force and/or objects, throwing, destroying or smashing property, abusing pets, sexual assaults and/or forced sexual activities, emotional and verbal abuse and intimidation, isolation, blocking doors and restraint on movement.

IS THERE ANY LEGAL PROTECTION AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE?
Protection and restraining orders are available from local law enforcement agencies and civil courts, while criminal charges may also apply. Orders are usually enforceable in all states and in Indian tribal lands. Many women shelters and on line resources are also available to offer protection and assistance to victims of domestic violence.
