Best Divorce Tips For Men: A Look at the Legal Side

On Behalf of The Law Office of Soheila Azizi & Associates, P.C. | Jun 2, 2015 | Divorce, Uncategorized

A divorce is the formal acknowledgement that a legal marriage has come to an end. Courts in the United States see two types of divorce known as “absolute divorce”, which shows a wrongdoing on one spouse’s part and “limited divorce”, which results in termination of the right to cohabitate but the marriage is not officially dissolved. A divorce is an important decision that a man or woman (or even both parties!) must make in some situations. But what are some tips centered especially around the man’s side and how he can obtain the best experience possible out of something disheartening? (1)

The Best Steps to Take

Documentation: In the case of a divorce, one must assume the worst that the other party will be secretly looking for information and evidence to use against the other party. Documents and records should be moved to a man’s close family or friend’s house for safekeeping during this time, as you want to keep all items safe and out of the possession of the other party. You may not expect your wife to be digging for information, but in many cases, anything will be used against you if applicable.

Bank Accounts: Remember one thing – it is easier to give money back than to have to fight to get it back. Go to the bank immediately and either divide the joint bank accounts that you share between your wife, or put all of it in your name. This may not make your case look the best in court but you must protect your assets at all costs. However, if your wife and children have no other money to keep them living decently, make sure that they at least have money to get on by until things are settled because this will especially appeal to a judge in the case of a future court hearing. You must always think about bills as life goes on day to day, and that they must still be covered no matter what.

Credit Cards: In another financial situation, you do not want your wife to have drained your joint credit card on a shopping spree to get back at you. In the end, you may be responsible and left out in the cold with whatever was charged seeing as it was between both of you. It is vital to close all joint credit or loan accounts and notify the banks that you are no longer responsible for the expenses that are acquired by the remaining party in charge of the cards.

Valuables and Safe Deposit Boxes: Any valuables like collections, jewelry, artwork, firearms, and more should be moved out of the house to a safe place to secure them from your wife in case she wants to sell them or get rid of them behind your back during this time. You can work on establishing a safe deposit box to store your valuables safely away from the house you shared.

Lawyers: Lastly, having a good attorney on your side from the beginning is in your best interest. Your attorney will be able to advise you about the proper steps to take and matters that need to be considered during this big change in your life.
